“People don't want their lives fixed. Nobody wants their problems solved. Their dramas. their distractions. Their stories resolved. Their messes cleaned up. Because what would they have left? Just the big scary unknown.”
―Chuck Palahniuk
After the last big (by Missouri standards) snowstorm, I sat at my desk sipping coffee and watched the neighbors struggle to get their car unstuck. It took about 30 minutes. Two people stopped to help, gave up, and moved on.
Then a cop stopped in and after a few minutes of yelling, shoveling, gesturing, and unsuccessful maneuvering, he got in his giant police SUV and pulled up right behind their car. Ever so gently he drove forward and pushed their car out with his own.
Off they went, waving and yelling their thanks. Morning drama over. Parking lot back to its calm snow-covered state.
Anyway, that was a show worth waking up for. Thoroughly enjoyable.
Not sure I agree with Chuck Palahniuk -- as much as I enjoy his writing. I think we've too much drama and in fact, in our dualistic world, you could say that we're the waking dead. It's pissing with rain in Devon, England (no snow for a long time -- the Anthropocene has seen to that). We're about to be hit by another storm of biblical but not cataclysmic proportions. Batten down the hatches and all that. Take care, Julian
Spring is still at least 2 months away here..... I enjoyed your morning drama. Up here, we all know what to expect and should be prepared, but such as your story still happens way more then we would like to admit !!!
